You People Are Freaks!
For the past few weeks, I've been sharing my home with a long-time friend who is in town doing a post-graduate internship at a local hospital. Let's just say that she is no slouch in the intellect department. But after having observed me (and, through me, my yarn-loving kind), JZ has come to the conclusion that, "You people are freaks!"I never thought about it but I suppose, to the casual observer, the following behaviors could seem, well, odd:
- Sticking my nose deep into yarn for a good sniff
- Rubbing skeins on my face
- Becoming visibly excited by the sight of lots of yarn
- Planning trips to buy yarn and knit with strangers
- Rushing up to people on the street and asking if I can touch their handknits
- Trolling LYS and the Internet to find yarn I do not already possess
- Enjoying the thought of rolling around in a tub full of yarn
Personally, I'm not at all put off by it. Look at it this way: no one is harmed in the process of my yarnish desires and there are a whole mess of us in bloglandia who are similarly afflicted. Take a gander at the comments on Grumperina's post about yarn sniffing. She's been brave enough to bring it out in the open! S.W.A.K. even has scented aromatherapy yarn, acknowledging the tendency to more fully experience the yarn beyond touch.
We're not freaks, JZ. We just have a special kind of love for the tactile experience of fiber. Is that so wrong?

You have to rub it on your face, otherwise you will never know how soft it is. Of course, I just realized now that it's weird when you do it with other people's yarn. Being a completely tactile person is great with other knitters because it's accepted to randomly touch what they're working on.
Ah the bouquet of a good yarn is a joy to behold! I confess, I'm a sniffer too!
I oncwe read that if you find something you really love, you should always buy TWO, since you never know when you'll find it again....that works in mutliples for yarn AND darning eggs ;)
I have come to suspect that you can never truly and completely trust the judgment of a friend that doesn't knit. Love them yes, trust their fiber judgment/s - not so much...
Prejudice be damned, the freak in me comes out - I must confess, I too am a closet yarn sniffer.
I've been very open about my yarn sniffing. You know what's really good? A freshly opened bag of Lorna's Laces. I love rubbing the yarn on my face, too.
