Desperately Seeking Yarn

I was absolutely frantic. I searched three closets, a half-dozen plastic bins and miscellaneous bags and boxes, yet I could not find two bleeping skeins of yarn. As I searched over and over again, it really hit home just how much yarn I'd amassed in 3 years.
Shame washed over me. How could I continue to automatically respond to the "S" word (sale!) now that my circumstances had changed? I felt like a glutton who'd stayed at the buffet too long, with pants unzipped to make room for the burgeoning belly. And yet, I still did not find the yarn. In light of this realization, I decided that it was time to lighten my load so I went on a search of a different kind – a search for a local group that would be willing to accept yarn donations.
This time, I did more than a cursory look-see. All bins, luggage, bags and hat boxes were opened and the large plastic bags began to fill one by one with Red Heart, Lion Brand, Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Jaeger, KnitPicks and Malabrigo. (ETA) No, not all the Malabrigo.
I felt as though I'd shed a second skin (and cleared out one of the three closets in the process). I also took the opportunity to organize the remaining yarn. Though still a substantial amount, at least I am able to more quickly locate that which I seek.
By the way, I did eventually find the Silkie.
Karen, Karen, have you any wool?
Yes ma'am, yes ma'am. Five bags full.

I don't know how these things happen but I'm in the same predicament. I just can't part with mine as easily as you can. I'm glad you found your Silkie!
i, too, have the same problem. you're very brave to make a decision and part with your yarn. like monica, i don't think i can do that yet.
Holy Toledo! What a woman!
I am in the same boat:) too much yarn in my stash. I keep trying to to find projects to knit with all of this old yarn. So tired of looking at it and there seems to be alot of twos and threes. Not enough to make a sweater out of.
I love all my sock yarn though.
Malabrigo? You're not SERIOUSLY going to donate MALABRIGO are you? I have a friend that works in Recreational therapy in an assisted living center, they are loom knitting hats and scarves for Dulaan and have sent scarves to the Orphan Foundation of America. Would give me an excuse to buy you lunch!
I'm just as shocked as Angie. You are donating MALABRIGO?!
As I regain my breath, I do have to share that I've been shedding some extra pounds from my stash. Not too many pounds though. I have to do low dosage withdrawals, or I might go into serious DTs. ;-)
I am shocked, amazed, proud, and just a little bit sad, all at the same time... does this make me an enabler??
And, seriously. The Malabrigo?? Really????
I am shocked as well that you would give away debbie bliss, rowan and malabrigo! Do you see how greedy we are that we want to see what you gave away and somehow wished that we could have gotten our hands on some:)
Good for you that you took charge and gave it away to those in need:)
Yay for you! It feels good to clean things out, even if it's beloved yarn. I keep a very small stash and I like it that way!
Wow, I'm so proud of your abilty to purge. So, who takes yarn donations?
Now hold on a minute! You didn't tell me there was ROWAN in the great purge of '07!
Good for you Karen, now you gotta resist refilling those coffers! :)
My sister did the same thing: she had a non-knitting friend help her clear her stash, asking, "Are you really going to knit that? Are you sure that's your color? HOW long has that been there??!!?" I visited shortly after and saw two "garbage" bags filled with gorgeous yarn -- where do you think HER yarn ended up? Oh, yeah! My suitcase was STUFFED with beautiful, free yarn. Yum, and excuse me while I unzip my pants!!
