Entanglements

My original plan for today was to show you just how much sock I was able to twist up in 24 hours with my brand-spanking new yarn, the lovely sportweight Chewy Spaghetti in “Cheeky.”

I was cruising along on one of the “Sensational Knitted Socks” chevron patterns late last night when I hit a wall of tired around 1 a.m. That’s when I started to make mistakes in the 2-round pattern; the kind of mistakes that mean you first try the restrained un-knit, then you pull out a row or two in frustration. After doing this twice into the wee hours, I decided the sock and I would be best off put to bed. There was still much love for the emerging footwear goodness.

Once I awake from a foggy, fitful sleep and get a little caffeine going through my veins, it is once again time to tackle the sock with a positive attitude and renewed vigor. After knitting and un-knitting and laddering down and ripping back at least four times, my positive attitude dissolved like sugar in the rain. Oh, yes. Girlfriend snapped and that sock became tangled, angry string in no time flat!

Before, in a fit of frogging rage:
Tangled Spaghetti yarn

After I regained control of the knotty problem (and myself):
Chewy Spaghetti yarn
I don’t blame the pretty yarn but I do think it wise to declare no socks for me – at least not today. I think I should back away from the Addis and call a truce with this particular effort. Does anyone else ever have one of those days where things just get all tangled up?

  • It is pretty yarn, and it won’t spoil, so wait for the right time. I’ve learned that when I’m tired I should read not knit. I may not remember the next day what I read, but the book isn’t harmed.

  • Oh, yeah, I can relate to your woes. Just switch to another project for a day or so, then come back to this one. That yarn is delicious!

  • i am like karen…a little voice inside my head…..step away from the yarn…

    lovely yarn.

  • Sometimes I just have to tell myself, “Step away from the yarn!” I have had to frog and start over on projects… not fun. Most of the time it’s worth it!

That yarn is pretty! I love Kris’s Chewy Spaghetti!

  • Good friends don’t let tired friends frog! It can lead to absolute disaster!

  • Jen

Yeah, sometimes it is better to pick up a new project for a little while. It is pretty yarn though!

  • Oh my gosh, who doesn’t have those moments? Sometimes you just have to throw it down for a few weeks and start over when the fog has cleared.

  • Oh hell yeah. I usually end up trying a different pattern or project though. If that doesn’t work, I curl up with a good book and send all the needles and yarn into a time out.

  • Some days are knitting days and some are not. It’s probably best to honor your brain’s obviously request that you put the needles down and just do something else.

    That’s very pretty yarn!

Oh, yeah. It’s especially scary when there’s laceweight yarn involved! No lace knitting for me when I’m tired, that’s for sure. Glad you & the yarn worked it out! 😉

  • Oh, poor you! Yes, I definitely have those knitting days every now and then, usually the knitting project goes flying across the room, and the husband (without a word) gets me a drink. LOL Hang in there. You and your sock will make it through.

  • All the time, twin. All the time…

    Blessings!

  • you are not alone…we all do this. i am glad that you are the yarn made peace…now leave it alone for a while and only come back when you know that the two of you can work together! 🙂

  • Karen —
Oh, yes — usually when I am overtired and/or stressed out about something else. I mean, who else has ever had to rip out a simple broken rib scarf FIVE TIMES! With fuzzy yarn, no less. I survived, the project and yarn did not!
    Peace,
    Chris.

  • oh, yes. There are days when a *wise* person work would stay in bed, safely isolated from pointy needles and tangle-worthy yarn, from complex patterns and mathematics. Not to mention cars and other heavy objects travelling at speed while guided by morons. Bed and a book is safe. Usually. I haven’t had a papercut in ages…

  • Yeah, I fucked up a washcloth on the bus yesterday. Even the washcloth was like, “How did you manage that?”

  • Here’s one for ya…I just finished a pair of socks this morning. I JUST realized that on this pair AND MY LAST PAIR on the gusset I SSKd when I should have K2TOG and vice-versa. On FOUR socks!!! I’m a total loser. I am not ripping four socks, but I am wondering how I managed that without noticing. AAAARGH.

  • Um, yes! How about the fact that I have started and re-started my very simple current SIP FOUR TIMES??? It’s *just* a toe up garter stitch rib yet it alluded becoming a sock x3! Now it finally succumbs to my will 🙂

Step away from the addi’s – for now!
